光纤环形器是一个单向装置，将光信号从一个端口导向另一个端口，每次只进行单向传输。尽管光信号可根据需要进行重新导向，但是光信号必须依次通过各个端口（也就是说，在到端口3之前，必须先依次经过端口1和2）。另外，光纤环形器可用于实现在一根光纤上的双向传输。由于它插入损耗低，并且对输入和反射的光功率具有很高的隔离度，因此光纤环形器又被广泛地用于高级通信系统和光纤感测器应用。
