Oriel\'s family of photdiode sensors come with a standard 1.5 Inch Series flange allowing instant connectivity to other Oriel instruments, such as monochromator exit slit assemblies. A 1/4-20 tapped hole can be used for rod or surface mounting. They are offered in standard and calibrated versions for use with Newport optical power meters. Our Ge photodiode sensors cover the spectal information rich 0.7 to 1.8 µm NIR measurements. These sensors are operated in the photovoltaic (unbiased) mode to provide the lowest noise for DC and low frequency operation since it avoids the shot noise associated with bias currents. We offer amplified and unamplified versions. Their large active areas make signal capture easy. Our Silicon photodiode sensors are offered in sizes from 5 mm diameter to 10 mm2. All are housed in an Oriel flanged enclosure.

Calibration

We offer calibrated and standard phodiode sensors. The calibrated detectors come with NIST traceable spectral responsivity values for every 10 nm over the detector\'s calibrated wavelength range. The Germanium detectors NIST traceable calibrated responsivity factors cover the 0.7 to 1.8 µm range. The UV Si detectors are calibrated from 200 to 1100 nm.

Amplification

Detectors are available with and without a built-in transimpedance amplifier. Table 1 gives the gain/bandwidth information for the built-in transimpedance amplifier. The amplifier provides transimpedance gains from 104 V/A to 109 V/A. It also offers three selectable time constant settings to allow you to match the upper bandwidth limit with your experimental needs. Operating at the lowest bandwidth setting allows you to operate at the lowest noise levels. The amplified models require +/-15 V DC; the 70703 or 70709 Lab Power Supply provides the required power. The silicon detectors offered here are operated in the photovoltaic (unbiased) mode. The photovoltaic mode of operation offers the lowest noise for DC and low frequency operation, since it avoids the shot noise associated with bias currents.

An unamplified detector may be connected to the model 70710 preamplifier. This item provides the same gain and time constant settings as is included with Oriel\'s amplified detectors. All amplifiers, whether built into the detector housing or stand-alone, require a power source. The 70710 includes a cable which connects it to the theOriel model 70703 or 70709 Lab Power Supply.

Table 1 Bandwidth Values

Time Constant Gain
104 V/A 105 V/A 106V/A 107V/A 108V/A 109V/A
MIN 100 kHz* 100 kHz* 80 kHz 8 kHz 800 Hz 80 Hz
MED 100 kHz 10 kHz 1 kHz 100 Hz 10 Hz 1 Hz
MAX 1 kHz 100 Hz 10 Hz 1 Hz 0.1 Hz 0.01 Hz

*The bandwidth is inversely proportional to gain only up to the limiting bandwidth of the amplifier. There may be a lower system limit due to the detector or other electronic element.

Electronic Accesories

The 70703 or 70709 Power Supply provides the required ±15 V for the amplifiers.

Connectors and Cables

All detectors have a BNC connector for signal out. We ship these detectors with a 6 ft. (1.8 m) long BNC cable; the amplified models also include a 6 ft. (1.8 m) long cable with 3 pin banana plug, for connection to the 70703 / 70709 Power Supply.

The current output from an unamplified Oriel Silicon or Germanium detector may be read using Newport 1918-R, 1936-R or 2936-R Optical Power Meters by using adapter model 71683 .

The voltage output from an amplified Oriel Silicon or Germanium detector may be read using Newport 1918-R, 1936-R or 2936-R Optical Power Meters by using adapter model 71686 .

Mounting

The flanged detectors are enclosed in aluminum housings with a 1/4-20 tapped hole in the bottom for rod mounting, and a 1.5 Inch Series female flange for direct coupling to Oriel Monochromators.
