High intensity VUV to UVA output with minimal VIS to IR
Longer lifetime than other types of arc lamps
Choice of three deuterium lamp types
Series Q Deuterium Light Sources are complete, compact, and economical light sources for users that require intense ultraviolet output with minimum visible to infrared wavelength emission.
Deuterium lamps are the preferred source of ultraviolet (UV) spectroscopy. Other light sources such as Xenon (Xe), Mercury-Xenon (Hg(Xe)), and Mercury (Hg) arc and Quartz Tungsten Halogen (QTH) lamps have a blackbody type spectra, with low UV emission and high visible light output. In addition, many photodetectors have higher sensitivity in the visible wavelengths rather than UV. For UV spectroscopy applications, this often causes the significant problem of stray light as scattered light in the visible spectrum exceeds the true signal light in the UV. However, the unique output spectrum of deuterium lamps begin in the Vacuum UV (VUV) region at 160 nm and extend into the UVA region at 400 nm. Unlike other lamp types commonly used for spectroscopy applications, the low visible and infrared light output ensures superior signal to noise for UV light measurement. Many popular applications such as High Performance Liquid Chromatography and environmental analysis utilize deuterium lamps for their intense UV light output.
In addition to the advantages in wavelength emission previously mentioned, deuterium lamps offer a significantly longer lifetime than other types of arc lamps. Oriel\'s selection of deuterium lamps offer typical lifetimes of 2000-2500 hours of operation, providing significantly longer operation times than that of Oriel\'s longest lasting Xe, Hg(Xe), and Hg arc lamps. Deuterium lamps also provide excellent output stability, with maximum peak to peak fluctuations ranging from 0.2% to 0.5%.
Three unique deuterium light source kits are offered. Select the 63162 for high uniformity. The63163 has a smaller arc size of 0.5 mm allowing the output light to be concentrated into a smaller area and creating a lamp of high irradiance. For applications not requiring wavelength output below 180 nm, the 63165 is a suitable option. The UV glass of the 63165 prevents wavelength emission below 180 nm, preventing ozone from being produced. The 63165 also has a 0.5 mm diameter arc for high irradiance and an average lifetime of 2500 hours, 500 hours longer than the typical lifetimes of the 63162 and 63163.
Each deuterium light source includes all the necessary components for operation. Included in this package is the housing, power supply, and required interconnection cables. The 60000 Q Series Housing is a suitable housing for low powered lamps. With no cooling fan, the housing quietly and efficiently maintains a safe operating temperature for the 30 W deuterium lamp. The 68942 power supply is designed for safe and optimum operation of Oriel\'s deuterium lamps. A heater circuit warms up the deuterium lamp for a pre-determined warm up time prior to sending an ignition pulse to the lamp. The power supply also has a safety interlock feature, preventing the lamp from being ignited or continued operation if the lamp housing cover of the Q Series housing is disconnected or a cable is not securely connected.
Deuterium lamps emit dangerous levels of UV radiation. Ensure that only authorized personnel are in the vicinity of the source, and wearing UV protective eyewear, clothing and gloves. Lighted UV warning signs, posted outside laboratory doors where UV sources are operating, can prevent accidental exposure. We also recommend using an electronic shutter to block the beam when the source is not in use. Or, keep the beam contained by using beam tubes or fiber optics to carry it to your target. If you do not require output below 180 nm, choose an ozone free lamp. For DUV work, vent the ozone to the outside or use an Ozone Eater.
