New asphere condensers for superior uniformity
Large diameter, collimated output
Built-in ignitor, condensing optics and temperature controlled cooling fan
Rear reflector collects back radiation from lamp, increasing output by ~60%
The Oriel Research Lamp Housings are our most sophisticated housings, they hold the lamp, ignitor, condensing optics, rear reflector and lamp cooling fan. Oriel offers three families of housings to hold our line of 50 to 1600 W Hg, Xe and Hg(Xe) DC arc lamps. Simply switch the socket adapter and you can change between lamp types and wattages, within the appropriate housing family. The socket adapter holds the lamp at the proper optical height for the rear reflector and condenser. To optimize the position and to compensate for lamp to lamp variations, Oriel provide rear reflector and lamp adjusters.
The lamp housings described on these pages are ideal for researchers who need the versatility of a housing that can run a number of different lamps and can support a wide range of optical accessories at the output.
We offer various types of condensing lens assemblies for our Research Arc Lamp Housings. They differ in:
Usable spectral range
Collimated and focused outputs
Aperture size
Beam quality and collection efficiency
Each assembly consists of one or more lenses inside a barrel housing with a focusing lever and locking screw. All condensers are designed to produce a collimated beam, but the focusing lever allows you to adjust the lens position to produce a converging or diverging beam.
The condensers have a female flange on the output so you can directly couple male flanged accessories such as filter holders, fiber optic assemblies and shutters. Choose the same size series of accessory as the condenser. Table 1 lists the size of series for each condenser. We also offer housings without condenser for those wanting to integrate their own optical train. Contact a Sales Engineer if you need a custom designed system.
The Pyrex® and borosilicate crown glass condensers do not transmit below 350 nm. If you need the UV output from the lamp, choose a fused silica condenser. To improve transmittance, we can coat the lenses with an anti-reflection coating on both sides, for a selected wavelength range. Contact a Sales Engineer for a price quotation.

Our aspheric lens-based condensers offer improved beam quality (uniformity and divergence) over spherical lens systems. We offer these for collimated and focused outputs. Their design ensures that they are corrected spherical aberration and lateral chromatic aberration with minimized longitudinal chromatic aberrations.

The socket adapter holds the lamp at the proper optical height for the rear reflector and condenser. To optimize the position and to compensate for lamp to lamp variations, we provide rear reflector and lamp adjusters. The combination of tilt and translational adjustment lets you precisely position the arc for maximum collection.
These lamp housings include a number of safety features to prevent lamp damage and accidental exposure. A door interlock prohibits the operation of the lamp while the door is open; a temperature sensor monitors the lamp’s operating temperature and controls the cooling fan accordingly.
Please specify the appropriate cable for your choice of lamp, when ordering a 50 - 500 W Lamp Housing. See the table below to identify the appropriate cable. The 450 - 1600 W Housings include a set of cables to run any lamp type.
