Each light source part number begins with its Legacy Part Number, the predecessor to these light sources. The rest of the part number tells the lamp power and type of lamp included, along with the type of lamp housing and F/# of the condensor lens assembly mounted to each housing. The part number is explained as follows:

These sources deliver stable, low to medium power UV to NIR radiation. They run selected 200 to 500 W Xe and Hg(Xe) lamps. Xenon lamps emit a reasonably smooth continuum through the UV-VIS and some high intensity lines in the NIR. They are good broadband sources. Hg(Xe) lamps have the structure of Hg lamps in the UV and the structure of Xe lamps in the NIR. These sources consist of:

Interchangeable Lamps

If a Light Source Model from the table above is purchased, another 200-500 W Xe or Hg(Xe) DC arc lamp can be used in that Light Source\'s Housing by switching both the lamp and socket adapter (if necessary). To interchange a lamp in the current lamp housing, use the proper socket adapter per 200-500 W Xe or Hg(Xe) DC arc lamp as shown below:

Lamp Model Number Lamp Wattage Lamp Type Effective Arc Size (mm x mm) Appropriate Socket Adapter Model
6258 300 Xenon, Ozone Free 0.7 x 2.4 66160
6259 300 Xenon 0.7 x 2.4 66160
6291 200 Hg(Xe) 0.5 x 1.5 66152
66142 500 Hg(Xe) 2.5 x 3.0 66159
6290 200 Hg(Xe), Ozone Free 0.5 x 1.5 66169

Lamp Housing

The housing provides a temperature controlled, stable environment for the lamp, and protects personnel from the harmful UV radiation emitted by the lamp. A number of safety features are incorporated into the housing to prevent accidental exposure and lamp overheating. It also houses the ignitor and collimating lens assembly. A socket adapter holds the lamp, vertically, in the center of the lamp housing. To use another suitable lamp with the existing lamp housing, a different socket adapter must be used. External adjustment knobs allow for alignment of the lamp. A reflector mounted behind the lamp collects the lamp\'s back radiation and redirects it to the condenser, maximizing light output.

Various lamp housings are available for the 200-500 W Xe and Hg(Xe) Research Arc Lamp Sources. Each lamp housing has a unique condensor lens assembly mounted to it. The optical characteristics per each lamp housing below should be considered when selecting a light source.

The new asphere condensers are corrected optics. The design corrects spherical aberration and lateral chromatic aberration with minimized longitudinal chromatic aberrations.

Power Supply

The OPS-A500 power supply is dedicated to 200-500 W DC arc lamps. It is rugged, reliable and highly regulated. It operates any of the specified lamps under extremely tight power or current control. In addition to superior performance, this supply has a number of features to facilitate source operation. External control of the OPS-A500 can be done via USB or RS 232 interface.

Mounting

Oriel lamp housings have adjustable height instrument feet. You can remove these and hard mount the housing to inch or metric optical tables and baseplates. The optical axis is 4.0 inches (102 mm) above the table. To mount a housing to a bench or rail, order the Carrier Mounting Kit. The kit includes a clamping carrier.

Safety Considerations

These sources emit dangerous levels of UV radiation and ozone. If you do not need output below ~260 nm, choose an ozone free lamp. If this is not an option, vent the ozone to the outside or use our Ozone Eater™ Ozone Converter. To protect yourself from the dangerous UV, wear Ultraviolet Safety Equipment like protective eyewear and gloves.
