By combining a half-wave plate, a Sheet Polarizer, and two 1 inch rotary stages, you can make a continuously variable attenuator that works with any linearly polarized light—and maintains the original input-polarization state. The rotation stages mount together, so you only need the space for one component on your table. If you have randomly polarized light, you can use two polarizers to make a variable attenuator.
